Scratching Is Natural For Cats, So Let Them Do It!

You may think that your cat is the cutest, most adorable pet on Earth, but you sure wouldn’t think of it as lovable once it starts to rip your curtains into shreds and wreck sofas, pillows, tables, and other furniture with its sharp claws.  It’s a good thing there are scratching posts to save the day, not to mention your furry friend, your home fixtures and your sanity.

Felines need these sturdy upright posts for the following reasons:
1. exercise and muscle enhancement
2. removal of old nail sheaths
3. stress, frustration and boredom relief
4. territorial marking
5. preparation or “warming up” for intense and lively play sessions

A scratching post is usually made of wood but there are some covered with carpet.  Both kinds however, would be neat additions to any home for their toughness, good looks and utility.  When buying one, make sure that the post is proportionate to your pet’s size.  An ideal scratching post would allow cats to get a full stretch, and would have a strong base to prevent tilting, wobbling and toppling.  At any rate, a taller and bigger scratching post is always better than a short one, particularly if you have space to spare in your home.
