Preventing Feline Induced Furniture Damage

Kittens need to learn early in their lives the places it is not okay to put their claws, and the places that are good.  Purchasing a scratching post is essential within the first couple weeks of owning a new kitten.  Some kitten’s claws will naturally gravitate towards a scratching post, but others might need a little encouragement.  If you apply a bit of catnip to a scratching post, and get your cat touching it with their claws, this will help to foster good habits in the future.  If your kitten starts to claw furniture or the carpet, make a sharp noise to interrupt them, then move them to a surface acceptable to be scratched on.

There are some cases where a kitten will have been born and raised thinking it is okay to scratch furniture, and this is the scenario you want to avoid the most.  Once a cat has developed a habit like this, it is difficult to break them of it, and the only way is through a lot of attention and the application of a few odiferous products designed to deter scratching.
